What is Candida?

Questions about CandidaAll day every day, people call me to discuss their symptoms of Candida. Some call because they've done quite a bit of research and know they have a problem. Others call because they read a book about yeast that suggested taking more prescription drugs and now feel worse than ever when they try to come off of those drugs. Many are realizing, finally, that prescriptions and antibiotics may have started the health problems and are now open to learning how to heal symptoms of yeast in a natural and effective way. Others are reading the Atkins Diet and realize that their weight gain may likely be attributed to a yeast problem. Still others call because a friend suggested that they talk with me about the variety of symptoms that Candida is likely to create.

The most common symptoms I see in new clients are:

How do you "get" Candida?

How do you get Candida

You have probably heard about the friendly bacteria that lives in the intestinal system of the body. There are many different kinds of friendly bacteria that are important for the human body. One very talked about strain is the Lactobacillus family. In this family we find Acidophilus. Yogurt manufacturers love to publicize about the "live cultures" their product contains. (They don't ever mention that the sugar they add makes the problem worse, not better.) Anyway, Acidophilus has been found to be critical for our digestive system to function properly.

Yes, there are many different types of friendly bacteria. They exist in part to prevent an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. The balance of your friendly and unfriendly bacteria is critical. Without the balance, your health will be compromised.

Candida Albicans, also known as intestinal yeast is natural to our intestinal system. The problem starts when this natural bacteria begins to overgrow and become a fungus. When we ingest antibiotics, sugar, birth control pills, sleep aids, drugs and medications of any kind we kill off the bacteria that keeps the Candida Albicans in check. In other words, when we ingest something not natural to the body, the good bacteria dies off and is suffocated. Then the Candida Albicans start to run rampant in the body.

Almost daily, I talk with a parent whose child is plagued with ear infections, diaper rash, thrush, gas, asthma, and hyperactivity. Once we work with the Candida and understand it, these symptoms often fall away within 30 to 60 days. Some seem to get this fungus in the birth canal. Other times, the mother is found without fungus or symptoms but the baby was given massive doses of antibiotics at birth or at an early age and the symptoms have appeared within several months of taking the medications. Most people don't relate the antibiotics to the troubles they've been known to cause because the two events are likely to happen weeks or months apart.

I often hear stories from clients who have taken massive doses of antibiotics for Lymes Disease or dental problems and then the symptoms of Candida follow. Again, because the medications and the symptoms may be separated by several months, the two are often not associated in the client's mind. Once we begin to suggest the actions known to help those with yeast problems, the symptoms diminish as the body systems begin to function normally again.

For Parents

Hyperactivity seems to be the big topic of conversation in our world when discussing children. We live in a world where there is a growing number of single moms, or two parent wage earners. Our children aren't allowed the joy of playing and running like we knew in past generations. This, coupled with the increased use of antibiotics, creates a hyperactive situation. I often talk with parents whose children are bouncing off the walls from the yeast and there's not enough play time to work it off. The only solution seems to be to treat the yeast. One mother told me, "I've met my four year old for the first time. After just 30 days of learning how to help him, he has calmed down and I am seeing his personality." One study by the Canada Research Foundation showed that out of 167 institutionalized patients, 163 of them had Candida.

Children with Candida become adults like you and me. If we've lived with the symptoms of yeast all of our lives, it can be pretty dramatic when we start feeling more energy, and clarity of thought. Our lives change and we want to tell the world. My dream is for you to find the answers you've been looking for if you or someone you know is experiencing some of the things described here.
